(Poetry) United Alienation

Originally published in English and German in The Transnational Literary Magazine, Volume IV.

United Alienation

India
rests

on my
shoulders,

keeps me warm
from autumn
breeze. She
whispers woes
into my ears; her muddled

words
hum
around

me —

a conversation that
I can’t or
choose not to
hear?

I drink Ethiopia. Fair
Trade. China, South Korea, Taiwan
hold me up, awkward posture.

It’s nice to meet you
all.
You’ve come a long way.

Vereinte Entfremdung
(German translation by Jullane Parthier)

Indien
ruht

auf meinen Schultern,

schützt mich wärmend
vor der herbstlichen
Brise.
Flüstert Note
in meine Ohren: verworrene

Worte die
um mich
herum summen —

eine Unterhaltung die
ich nicht
hören kann oder
will?

Ich trinke Athiopien. Gerechter
Handel, China, Sudkorea, Taiwan
halten mich auf,
unbehagliche Stellung

Schon, euch alle kennen zu lernen.

Ihr seid weit gekommen.
